Coming back to development http://www.erstwhiledeveloper.com The Erstwhile Developer http://www.erstwhiledeveloper.com/blog/post/the-right-mindset The right mindset http://www.erstwhiledeveloper.com/blog/post/the-right-mindset This is a tricky post to write as it addresses one of my own shortcomings: mindset. Getting, being and remaining in the right mindset to get my job done. I think that this inability to get into and remain in the right mindset is one of the biggest challenges I face day to day.

http://www.erstwhiledeveloper.com/blog/post/the-team The Team http://www.erstwhiledeveloper.com/blog/post/the-team What does your team represent to the rest of your organisation? It's a question I’ve been mulling over in my head for a while now and I wanted to put those thoughts into a blog post. I’m sure that these points have been made many times, by many people, in more terse language than I, but as I'm in the process of transferring to a new lead role myself I thought I'd take a minute to think through things again.

http://www.erstwhiledeveloper.com/blog/post/its-not-about-the-bike It's not about the bike http://www.erstwhiledeveloper.com/blog/post/its-not-about-the-bike I like cycling, I'm not fast and I'm certainly not fit, in fact I'd go as far as to say I'm not an incredibly good cyclist at all but I do get enjoyment from riding the roads of Sydney with friends and enjoying the outdoor life coffee. Cycling gives you me an opportunity to relax mentally and to allow those thoughts that have been percolating in your mind a chance to form into ideas, plans, and actions.

One of the ideas that I found myself mulling over last week was how much the common practices used in bunch cycling align with those used by successful team leads. I wanted to explore that a little more to see how this relationship works. I don't think that there's anything new or groundbreaking in this post, it's all common sense stuff but I wanted to get it down in a post anyway.

http://www.erstwhiledeveloper.com/blog/post/the-err-the-oh-and-the-argh The Err? The Oh! and the Argh! http://www.erstwhiledeveloper.com/blog/post/the-err-the-oh-and-the-argh This is a post about learning. One thing I've identified recently is that I'm hit by problems in different ways depending on where I'm at on the learning curve. When I'm start out with something new I get stopped by Errr? problems. Errr? problems are the kind that leave you with a feeling that you have absolutely no idea what you're doing. As I develop these change into Oh! problems. Oh! problems are those that at first seem insurmountable but which lead inexorably to moments of exquisite clarith. Argh! problems come last, right when you think you've got things sorted they're frustrating, horrible and on the face of it completely inexplicable.

http://www.erstwhiledeveloper.com/blog/post/rss-really RSS? Really? http://www.erstwhiledeveloper.com/blog/post/rss-really I've had a couple - literally a couple - of requests for a RSS feed of this blog. Unfortunately Keystone doesn't provide one straight out the box which has given me the opportunity to create one myself; Which I've now done; I think. It's a very crude implementation - some might say that it is the very definition of an MVP - but it shall suffice. Enjoy: http://www.erstwhiledeveloper.com/rss.

http://www.erstwhiledeveloper.com/blog/post/i-built-a-workbench I built a workbench http://www.erstwhiledeveloper.com/blog/post/i-built-a-workbench I built a workbench for woodworking. Related: we should all take some time to look at whether we're making the most of the IDE that we use everyday.

http://www.erstwhiledeveloper.com/blog/post/es-6-err ES6... err http://www.erstwhiledeveloper.com/blog/post/es-6-err I've been dipping my toes into the murky waters of ES6 to try an better understand this latest update to the language and the impact that it will have on me as a developer (and leader of developers). These are my first thoughts.

http://www.erstwhiledeveloper.com/blog/post/i-am-the-erstwhile-developer I am The Erstwhile Developer http://www.erstwhiledeveloper.com/blog/post/i-am-the-erstwhile-developer Technical skills disappear over time, the less we use them the rustier they become and the less relevent they are to us, our work, and our teams. This post investigates that somewhat alarming notion.
